Surrey Quarter Sessions Records - Order Book and Sessions Rolls 1663-1666 - Presented by the Records and Ancient Monuments Committee - Volume VIII.

There is an amazing amount of information included on this CD, not just the offenders, but the Bailiff, Constable, Juror, and as Witness or Prosecutor; also of those persons acting as bail for the principal party in a Recognizance.

Punishments follow the former tendency to fines rather than any other: though occasional sentence of flogging are to be found.

Trades and Professions - examples of almost all the callings are included.

Offences - These, for the most part, record the same tale of petty crime or neglected duties. Neglect or obstruction of Highways; failure to fulfil a Public Office; failure to render Accounts or to collect 'Chymny Money' (ie Hearth Tax) refusals to watch by night, to assist the Parish Constable to pay Rates; battery and assault; petty theft; vagrancy and drunkenesss.

More noticeable than in previous years are the cases of poaching or of actual infringement of the Game Acts, which forbade the possesion of greyhounds and similar dogs or the use of guns to kill game to all who were not possessed of land worth the statutory annual amount.

There is a listing of names summoned to the Court in the capacity of Bailiff, Constable, Juror, and as Witness or Prosecutor; also of those persons acting as bail for the principal party in a Recognizance. These names have been collected alphabetically in Appendix II but, to avoid repetition, do not appear in the Text or General Index.
